The realist’s guide to quantum technology and national security

Good afternoon, I would like to share a Deloitte review, titled ‘The realist’s guide to quantum technology and national security’.

As many readers will know, quantum technologies, including quantum computing, are expected to have diverse applications with regard to national security.

The possibilities afforded by advanced quantum information technologies may affect some of the most important national security tools and tasks, such as:

  • Intelligence collection
  • Solution optimisation
  • Encryption
  • Stealth technology
  • Computer processing, and
  • Protection of sensitive information and communication

The Review provides a brief into some of the operational and technical challenges in quantum computing that could help temper some of the hype around quantum information technologies use in national security.

Although one of the key overarching themes of the Review with regard to quantum and national security is exercising prudence, it reveals a thinly veiled sense of urgency: ‘Begin today, to be ready tomorrow’.

Archer continues to participate and contribute to the ongoing national discussion on quantum, to help inform the development of Australia’s National Quantum Strategy. The strategy development, and such roundtables, are led by Australia’s Chief Scientist Dr Cathy Foley.

Sincerely,

Dr Mohammad Choucair, FRACI FRSN GAICD
